Are you an Internet Addict?

I believe there are many people who are addicts to internet that afraid to admit it or do not realize they are really addicts. Being an addict to internet is not something that make you feel ashamed about yourself, because it's not going to change your personality. I think it only makes you less social with people. I would say that I am temporary  addicted to internet . I spend at least 3 hours a day on my laptop, and that's due for two reasons. First, I do not get the time to stay with mt friends because of the conflict of time. when I have no classes my friends have. Second, living in the USA make me spend a lot of time on the internet. when I am home, I spend most of my time working with my father, staying with my family, visiting my grandmother everyday, etc. So I am really not worried about my addiction to the internet because am sure when I graduate and go back home I will have no time to spend on the internet.
My question is who else addicted to the internet and are you worried about that.

  1. I spend a lot of time on the Internet. Sometimes I do things related to school or work, while other times I will be on Facebook or browsing through my favorite websites, forums, and blogs. If Internet addiction prevents you from making friends, having relationships, going to school and/or work, etc., then it is a problem, but I think that if you are able to function normally, even while being addicted, it is not a problem.

  3. As a college student, I feel that majority of my peers and I are all mildly addicted to the Internet. We all use Facebook, email, Skype, Twitter, Moodle and all sorts of Internet capable devices to help us throughout the day. Thinking back before we had all of these things, I remember only using a computer and having to use a dial up connection to access the Internet. Now we can access it wirelessly via laptops, video game consoles,Ipods, and our cellphones. To me, the invention of these devices has made it extremely difficult not to spend tremendous amounts of time on the Internet. While the accessibility has changed the methods of using the Internet has changed as well. Traditionally available to offer and transfer information only, we can now play video games, instant message, video chat, and even shop. We are now allowed to access people and stores, nationally. Because of these many advancements it is now extremely impossible to spend a set amount of time on the Internet without being labeled addicted.

  4. I for a long time had a roommate that was addicted to the internet mainly her different social networking accounts. She was literally checking them every 2 minutes, she had to have her phone in order to do this. We went shopping once and her phone died and I thought she was going to have an anxiety attack. She did eventually get some help and now she is just very careful as to what she allows herself to view. She also has somehow enabled her computer to time how long she is on the sites and they will shut down. This scares me that it is necessary for some people to have something that forces them off.

  5. I believe everyone that uses the internet at all is in their own way addicted to the internet. Something as small as email is addicting. Whether you admit it or not, a lot of people check their email more than once a day. I would say that is considered an addict. The convenience of it is what makes it addicting. No one likes to send out letters anymore, when you can just send a quick email and usually within a day you get a response. So its the convenient of the internet that makes it addicting whether it be online shopping, social networks, or anything online.

  6. Spending much time on the internet depends on what someone does. For instance people doing research can spend long hours to find relevant materials. I think addiction comes in situations where someone is spending much time on the internet when they don't have to and also if it is affecting their lives.

  8. Internet addiction, no matter the venue (shopping, porn, news, discussion forums) is a problem that is tearing up homes, families, and separating friends. I was married to someone who had a serious addiction to the internet in the form of chat and online communities. It started innocently enough with trying to keep in touch with friends through AIM and then developed into membership in at least half a dozen different chat programs and online communities. The problem comes not necessarily in the content or form of the adiction, but rather in the time that it steals from established relationships between spouses, parents/children, and friends/peers. Also addiction to being online creates the same apathy toward personal responsibilities that many physical addictions cause such as failure to meet obligations at home i.e. cleaning, cooking, repairs and maintenance, proper nutrition, rest, and even hygiene. Online addiction is also responsible for excessive missed days at work and poor performance and missed days in school. While online addictions are very real, I believe that the problem is an avoidable one that unfortunately society is in general unwilling to address. While the advances in technology have unquestionable made our lives better and will continue to do so, I dont think that most of those in society have the maturity nor have they developed the discipline to be able to control and utilize the available technology in a responsible manner. Cell phones are perhaps the greatest advancement of our day, allowing us to keep in touch and improving our safety and security, yet how many of us have watched videos or actually seen people walking into walls, down stairs, or seen auto accidents that were a direct result of people lacking the maturity to use these devices responsibly? Addiction to being online is real, but the root problem is an immature and irresponsible society that has an attention span of about 3 seconds, and insatiable appetite for being entertained, and an aversion to growing up and learning personal responsibility.

  9. The internet is an indispensable tool for work, education, and communication. It has become such a vital part of our daily lives that I believe internet addiction is much bigger problem than people may realize. I think it is an issue that many are also embarrassed to admit which is another reason why it is not giving the attention it needs. I think its really important we all start making an effort to address the issue so that people can get the balance back into their lives. Like any addiction, online addiction has the potential to be a huge distraction and setback in one's goal's and path in life.

  10. I do think I am addicted to internet since I use it for study purposes and contacting with friends and family some times. I do not spend much of my time using it. I have a younger brother who is really addicted to internet. He spends three quarter of his day sitting in front of his laptop and does pretty much everything in front of his laptop such as doing homework’s and eating his food. We used to be worry about him since he didn’t have much contact with the outside world. We tried to engage him in outdoor activities whenever we can but every time we do that he gets upset and unhappy. Now after he graduated from high school he started to quite using internet slowly by himself. So I guess it was a teenage period for him.

  11. Internet Addiction is a fairly new concept that is becoming a huge problem.
i wonder if Dr. Drew has a cure for this one. I think that internet addiction will start being a major problem with the next generation because they are born surrounded by technology. I know 2 and 3 years who know how to unlock and take pictures on my Iphone... #problem.

  12. I am an internet addict. I constantly find myself checking Facebook, Twitter and my email in the middle of class and as I'm walking to and from class.

I think this condition has just become part of the society that we now live in. Or this could just be myself thinking that I'm normal.

  13. I believe teaching is playing a big role on making teenagers more addicted to the internet since most of the projects and homework must be done online. I think when people due projects online they get bored and start checking facebook, youtube and etc.
