Online Poker Addiction

Since I know some friends who play online poker to make money for living. I searched for poker addiction and I found this article about it, which I think it's really interesting. It talks about how online poker getting a real problem among college students.

some interesting quotes from the article:

-"In this summer's World Series of Poker, eight of the nine players who made the final table were 29 or younger. It's also a man's game: Only 3 percent of the 7,319 entrants were women."

-Tom Hall, UCF's director of substance abuse prevention and intervention, said the university has created what it calls peer advocates, students who go back into their communities and discuss health issues, including gambling. There's also a clinic on campus that treats substance abuse and gambling addiction.
But universities have to be careful, he notes.
"One of the things that's always a struggle in any kind of health programming is, how do you balance drawing undue attention to a subject vs. addressing it?" he says.

  1. I can attest personally that online poker can become addicting. My best friend Daniel at the time was playing @ bookmaker.com. He had started off with like a hundred bucks. Within a hour and a half through ups and downs he was up to 900 bucks. He became daring and greedy and went almost all in. Needless to say he lost the money. Instead of quitting he put more money in, and eventually lost more money. After that time poor Daniel learned his lesson, and I had a a good laugh!

  2. I know online poker can be addictive. Just the thrill of competition and winning can keep you from doing other work, like studying. I balance it out. I devote a certain amount of time for studying and maybe have some free time at the end of my day to check email, play some online poker, etc.

  3. One of my friends actually one a large tournament online and was given a free ticket to attend the World Poker Tournament. He didn't get very close to winning, but the buy in is somewhere around $10,000.

I can see online poker as a very attractive pastime for college students because it is easy, accessible, daring, and fun. And sometimes it pays off. But not too often.

  4. Internet poker is something that i dabbled in for a while it is a very fun thing that i could easily see how people get addicted to. not only the fun of the game but people also get addicted to making money that comes with winning the game. the more you win the more you make, i guess this is where the addiction comes from.

  5. @ Curtis, I love gambling and I go to Vegas every year. The reason I believe that makes people lose is they never say that's enough and always wanna win more. It's really obvious, they let you win at the beginning, and make you lose by the end. I never played online but if you go to Vegas, once you win a good money, you must leave and change the table and play in different casinos.

  6. For me online poker just doesn't do it. I lose the human element with it. I like to be able and see everyone that I am going up against. Saying that though online poker makes it easier to get a game started, while doing one in person could take a lot of time setting up.
