A study was conducted at ten different high schools in Connecticut, by Dr. Timothy Liu from Yale University. He asked more than 150 questions about health, risky behaviors, and impulsiveness -- including seven questions on Internet use.
- Have you ever missed a class or important social activities because you were surfing the internet?
- Have you ever had an "irresistible urge" to be online?
- have you ever experienced a growing tension or anxiety that can be relieved only by using the Internet?
- Have you ever tried to quit or cut down on using the internet?
Those are some of the questions that were asked to the students. The study found that 1 in 25 teens are addicted to internet.
personally, I do not find it a shocking statistic at all. Children nowadays are growing up in environments surrounded by electronics and internet is accessible almost anywhere; PC's, i-phones, i-pods, i-pads, etc. Some teens can not imagine how life would look like without internet.
What is you view about teens and pre-teens using the internet?
Advantages vs. disadvantages?

I think it is very important for pre-teens and teens to have a set of rules in place for the internet. Especially because internet is on our phones now as well. Internet Addiction is a phenomenon that is growing fast.
ReplyDeletei personally also think not only teens but many adults have an addiction. you see numerous adults who own businesses or just for leisure just checking their e-mail over and over again just because their phone has the net. eventually we will be witnessing the growth of a new industry rehab for net addicts because it is getting serious i have heard people say they use internet on their mobile devices than even watch TV.
ReplyDeleteI think that parents should help the cause more and not give iphones and such internet capable phones to enforce a time limit to the internet access. This will keep growing though for sure, especially as we see prices drop and drop.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned by barnwell and etull, it is important that parents regulate the amount of time that their children spend on the internet and make sure they are participating in other aspects of life.
ReplyDeleteAsadp brings up a good point in that this is not an issue belonging to just the younger generations and people need to be more aware of the time they spend on the internet and attempt to reduce it in order to lead more balanced lives of reality and digital aspects.
The advantages are mostly school related such as research, communicate, explore, and using the helpful sites that help them with their homework to figure out problems and allows them to perform research from home and get better grades in assignments. Also, depending on what age, it can be a good tool for developing social and interactive skills. the disadvantages of teens using the internet are lack of sleep, being physically weak, visiting sites that are not, suppose to be visited, being addicted, lack of friendship and contact with the real world. While internet is a powerful tool, it can be used for illegal, distracting and harmful activities. It is important that there is at least a moderate degree of parental supervision.
